Jonesing for the Playa

>> Monday, July 19, 2010

So its been a month since we got our sweet ride, and I only FINALLY got to the beach last week! Although it was worth the wait because we had such a fabulous time.

I invited some neighborhood moms to come out with us, and we all rode out separately, arriving around 10:45 and meeting at Field Six of Jones Beach. I planned the trip, and wanted to go to Jones, and after doing some research on which field to go to (field = parking area, and section of the beach), we chose 6 because its the only field where you can park right on the beach. At fields 4 and 5 you park near the bay and have to cross the highway via an underground tunnel to get to the beach (it sounds sketchy, its not, its just a longer walk). Although on the weekend, all my sources say that field 6 fills up by 8:30am...

To the beach, I brought the Bugaboo Frog, with the thinking that the big wheels could handle the sand and I could store my stuff in the basket underneath and carry my RIO Brands Backpack Chair on my back. My other option was to carry C in the Olives & Applesauce, and then carry my bags or use my Granny Cart (something like this for all you non-NY'ers: Honey-Can-Do CRT). In Atlantic City, the Bugaboo was great in the sand, but at Jones the sand was much looser and it was SO HARD to drag the stroller, which held the diaper bag, my LL Bean Tote (with our suits, towels, change of clothes, toys), our lunch, and our  Lil Nursery Tent... oh and my son! But I dragged that sucker and we found our spot in the sand.

The day was overcast, which was actually nice. There was a breeze and it was not too sunny, which was great because my son is now refusing to wear his hat (his face gets lathered in sunscreen), and the beach was not ridiculously crowded. I was actually able to sit back in my beach chair while my son dug in the sand and ran around with his friends. We sat ways away from the water and there was NOTHING around that he could make trouble with! Well until he decided to climb up on the beach chair, but by then we were ready to call it a day.

The only minor downside of the day, was the amount of sand stuck to my son, our gear, my camera, cell phone, money, everything! It was out of control! Such is the beach with a toddler. But we definitely plan to head back soon. Maybe once a week or once every other. So any NYC area moms reading this, let me know if you want to join in next time!

I love Jones Beach!! Field six is the best! I leave here at 7a to make sure we get in on Saturdays. Thought my sister doesn't care for the early wake up, she loves the prime beach spots we have all day. Glad you enjoyed.

I grew up in The Bronx and we lived to go to Jones Beach. It was a blast from the past seeing it mentioned here!

Stopping by from SITS.

SO jealous! We were actually supposed to go to Jones Beach on Monday afternoon, but we were spooked by the rainy morning... Also, I have that same My Mommy Rocks outfit! If you pack a little baby powder, it can help remove the sand easily...
